Stars come out for Netherwood

Ricky Gervais signs the Save Netherwood Petition

You’ve got to hand it to Jane Clinton and her indefatigable fellow campaigners fighting to save Netherwood Day Centre.

As showcased in today’s Camden New Journal, they’ve gone straight to the A-list and signed up Ricky Gervais as their latest high-profile backer.

He’s not the only star backing the campaign either.  Benedict Cumberbatch, of the BBC’s Sherlock Holmes and the National Theatre’s Frankenstein, and actress Phyllida Law, mother of film star Emma Thompson have also signed the petition.

Consider my hat duly doffed.  Clearly my fellow Kilburn councillors and I will need a second take at joining Jane in handing over the petition to Camden’s Mayor, so successful has the campaign been in collecting names.

Meanwhile, with the consultation period on Camden’s adult social care changes due to end shortly, I’m hoping that we’ll be able to press ahead with practical discussions between Camden and Brent (as well as other neighbouring boroughs) about how they could send elders with mental health needs to Netherwood and thus keep it afloat.

Watch this space…at least you’ll get to do some celeb-spotting at the same time!
